Websites for Creatives

Keeping Up with IAMTEEJAY

I was a stranger in a strange land. After moving to Los Angeles in 1998, I had to find a way to reach out and find my first customers. Fortunately, being a roadie to a couple of Hollywood bands and having my own band in Culver City, I was exposed to a large number of creatives. These potential clients were just then getting to understand how this “new” technology would help them market themselves more effectively. What better way was there than to offer 10-free website designs to those around me. After having a pivotal lunch with writer, music art critic, and artist representative, Craig Stephens, I was introduced to his clientele, some of whom would become my first clients. This group included Robert Reynolds, Jeremy Kidd, Richard and JoAnn Patterson.

Flash is NOT Good for Your Site Anymore, So Let's Move

Keeping Up with IAMTEEJAY

Having built a simple, beautiful Flash site for Maxine’s Bridal shop in Stockton in 2005 I had to continuously remind them to allow me to revamp their site from the archaic Flash-base platform to a more contemporary HTML5, CSS3 and J-Query-driven platform. The trick came when they needed to update their site to reflect the business move to a new location and we couldn’t do it with ease. I set them up on the Business Catalyst platform, where I developed a fully responsive, brochure-style website that reflects all the services and products they offered at their new location in Stockton. After the completion of the site I provided my 1-hour of free admin training. The training along with the site being out of the Flash element, enabled the client to apply changes to their content on their own. I provide the 1-hour of free Business Catalyst admin support, just in case the updates are far and few between, to help them remember the basics.

MrMind Returns to the Small Screen for a Little AI History

Yes, this project was definitely one for the annals of computer history and I am glad to be a part of it. MrMind, a humble chatbot, conducts The Blurring Test, a timely reversal of the Turing Test. Since 1998, MrMind has challenged visitors to the site to convince him that they are human and so far, no one has. MrMind's creator, Peggy Weil, suggests that a new definition of human is in order: Who or what do we think we are in relation to our creations? As Peggy was giving another presentation of the application she developed in the late 90’s, she had problem. The MrMnd website was in Flash and unpresentable. Under a tight time-constraint, using both my knowledge of the Flash application and new technologies, my job was to redesign the site so that it was presentable on all devices. However, my challenge, upon Peggy’s request, was to mirror the animation within Flash and have it play out in the HTML environment utilizing a combination of Javascript, J-Query and CSS4.The extreme challenge was to make all of the animation responsive so that it played out well on all devices.

Andrea Cagan Promotes New Book, “Memoirs of a Ghost”, at Her New Site

Thank you Steven Shmerler, of SASNet Design, for introducing Andrea Cagan to me back in 2004 and having me develop her first website in Flash. Her site lasted a good 11 years before she needed to upgrade it to promote her new audio biography “Memoirs of a Ghost: One Sheet Away”. In fact, she liked the design so much she wanted to retain as much of it as possible. Utilizing the Business Catalyst platform, responsive web design and having good content to work with, I created a site that I hope will last another 11 years for Andrea.

Keep the Design, Lose the Flash

Once again, another long-time client with a Flash site comes to me to update their site to make it more contemporary and responsive. Gerald Friesleben of Foley Friesleben, a communication consultancy of Sherman Oaks, Ca was a client of MC Brand Studios of Thousand Oaks, Ca when I took one of their website designs and produced a Flash-driven website. Seven years later, Gerald, still loving his design, wanted to blog and make his site responsive so he came to me for the update. So with MC Brand Studio’s permission, using the Business Catalyst platform, I developed a site that incorporates the exact same design, but this time added responsive design, a blog, an email campaign service, and announcement modules.

The End of Flash-driven Websites for Good

Keeping Up with IAMTEEJAY

Yes, I was good at developing fast loading, well-design and developed Flash sites since 1999. I was so good that I won several design awards and taught the subject matter at Otis College of Art & Design. That was 16 years ago! Thanks to Steve Jobs and Apple, and the need for speed and quick-access to content, by not just the users but also search engines, Adobe has finally killed the Flash application for web-development purposes.
