SSL: Not Just for E-commerce, Database or Member-driven Websites Anymore

The web is experiencing another growth-spurt/growth-pain moment. Late last year, Google, in an attempt to make the web a safer place, introduced an algorithm that seeks out the SSL certificates of websites.  This Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a standardized protocol that allows for a secure and private session between you and the website you are viewing. This Spring Google announced that they will begin favoring sites that use SSL in their search engine.  By default, penalizing sites that don’t.

Thanks to Tony Carlson of Tech-Hero and Amanda Platt of California Association of Resource Conservation Districts, I have had the privilege of designing and developing a website for the Elk Grove Greener Gardens Project a few years back. I was a stranger in a strange land. After moving to Los Angeles in 1998, I had to find a way to reach out and find my first customers. Fortunately, being a roadie to a couple of Hollywood bands and having my own band in Culver City, I was exposed to a large number of creatives. These potential clients were just then getting to understand how this “new” technology would help them market themselves more effectively. What better way was there than to offer 10-free website designs to those around me. After having a pivotal lunch with writer, music art critic, and artist representative, Craig Stephens, I was introduced to his clientele, some of whom would become my first clients. This group included Robert Reynolds, Jeremy Kidd, Richard and JoAnn Patterson.

Los Angeles Rental Studio Goes Responsive

I have been doing business with Anthony Nex since 2006, starting with the development of his photography site, which led to his wife’s Kristine Nex’s set stylist business, and ending with a site for his rental studio location in Los Angeles, the Helms Daylight Studio located in the historical Helms Bakery building complex. The site has enjoyed a simplistic layout for over 8 years, but has had to be updated several times to accommodate the changes in web technology. Today, I launched a fully responsive Helms Daylight Studio website on the Business Catalyst platform. The platform offers a robust set of tools that enable its customers to not only effectively market their business, but also maintain their site on their own. Additionally, Anthony uses the Email Campaign services, already included with his subscription, to send out Email Campaign blasts for not just his business, but also Kristine’s.

Getting it Right in 2016!

Regina Clark came to me back in 2013 to have a website developed for her high-energy speaking, just as I was mastering my abilities to develop fully responsive websites. Implementing a mobile redirect to a mobile-friendly portion of her website, I was able to provide Regina with an effective website to help her with the marketing of her business. However, Regina has returned to me after taking a 1-year hiatus from her business, with a new company and brand identity. Having already served her recently, I offered a lower rate to revamp the design of the site and make it fully responsive this time around. Her site is on the Business Catalyst platform, utilizing its CMS , Blog and Email Marketing services. So, not only will she enhance her brand and expand her services, I will get to develop her site to meet today’s technological needs to effectively market itself on the Internet.

Local Marin, Private Chef Seeks More Visibility Online

Peter Asmus came to me to see if I can help improve visibility of his partner’s site, KT's Kitchen, a private chef catering Marin County out of Stinson Beach. KT’s site was using a single-page template and needed additional help to expand its SEO-abilities within its limited resources. First by establishing what is important to the business and who her target audience was, we established a set of keywords and then applied them to all the page URLs, meta page titles and descriptions, headings, link and image meta data, IDs and names. I then recreated a sitemap.xml, and set up accounts for us to track the effectiveness of our efforts at Google Analytics, Bing and Google Webmaster Tools, and provided a base traffic report. In 30-days I will produce a complimentary report, comparing traffic from the base report and suggesting efforts to improve the site’s marketing efforts.
